Meet the Graduate: Jordan Hildreth

In the spirit of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2020 (2nd-6th November), we thought it was the perfect time to introduce our latest Graduate Engineers!

Tomorrow’s Engineers Week aims to highlight the exciting and varied opportunities available for young people across the spectrum of engineering.

We have recently taken on 10 talented Graduate Engineers who are starting their careers at Tharsus Group. Over the next three years, they will complete a rotation across department at both Universal Wolf and Tharsus.

Let’s start with Jordan, a Graduate Engineer from our 2020 intake.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in engineering? Have you always been interested in the subject, or was it something at school that sparked your attention?
I’ve always loved building and making things from a young age of riding bikes and constantly modifying them and making, for example trikes out of bikes. My dad would take me to the police auctions and buy a load of semi-broken bikes so I could fix them up (or break them more). And I loved it so when it came to my career, I knew I wanted to pursue engineering.

What does the graduate programme at Tharsus Group look like – how will you be spending your time?
The graduate programme at Tharsus Group looks very exciting, with all the different secondment rotations allowing me to have a taster of all the different departments and seeing where I would fit best within the company.

Is there a particular rotation you’re most excited about?
After doing really well in the manufacturing module at university, I thought I would end up in manufacturing, however I’m quite excited to get involved with pilot manufacturing as I think it will be a good challenge. The aim of pilot manufacturing is to figure out the best way of implement a product into production, considering economies of time and money.

When you’re not in the throes of Grad life, how do you spend your time?
Well, I recently bought a ‘doer-upper’ house so most evenings and weekends I tend to be stripping wallpaper/ paint or trying my hand at plastering.

What advice or encouragement would you give to school-aged students who might be considering engineering?
Absolutely go for it! There’s so much out there to learn, and there are so many people willing to teach you and help you get there.
