Powder Coating: How to Get Better Finish Quality from the Start in Sheet Metal Painting

15 July 2026

Universal Wolf has 20+ years of experience with powder coating, other sheet metal painting finishing services such as wet painting, and surface preparation like shot blasting.

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating in sheet metal painting is a dry finishing process used to protect and improve the appearance of metal parts. Powder is applied to a prepared surface using electrostatic spray equipment which makes the metal part grounded, attracting the powder to the surface. The paint  is then cured to create a continuous protective coating.

Our customers can specify the colour and texture of the finished product as part of the project order requirements to ensure they get the right results. We can also support and advise based on our experience with our design for manufacturing service, considering the product’s destination and desired end use.

Powder coating is a popular metal finishing choice for many reasons which we’ll cover below, and the market is set to continue this trend in the coming years:

UK powder coatings forecast: ~USD 735.28m by 2033 (CAGR ~5.11% from

2025–2033) (reedintelligence.com)

What do our customers gain from good powder coating?

For our customers, a professional powder coat does more than improve appearance.

It supports their products in several ways, including:

  • Consistent colour and finish
  • Controlled coating thickness
  • Reliable coverage across the part
  • Improved durability over time

When powder coating is integrated into our end-to-end process, it also helps reduce delays, rework and downstream quality issues.

Why does powder coat application quality matter?

Application quality matters to ensure the powder is evenly distributed on the component part for consistent coverage across flat panels, folds and fabricated features.

Good professional results depend on strict process control and operator skill level, we have over 100+ experience in our paint shop.

What risks need to be managed that can affect finish consistency?

To ensure that the powder coating process is top quality, we need to make sure that:

  • The right equipment is being used, and it is well maintained. Universal Wolf’s dedicated painting plant can offer much more than powder coating, with a recently installed wet paint line and a shot blast chamber to improve finish results.
  • The operator is trained and skilled in the application of powder coatings. With our wealth of experience in Universal Wolf’s paint shop our customers can be assured that their products are in good hands.
  • The facilities in the paint shop are suitable for hanging the product correctly. We have procedures in place for safely handling the painted items without incurring damage once they come out of the stoving ovens, this prevent any rework being needed.

The risk we are mitigating by covering all these bases is that if we have too little powder in one area or too much in another can affect both appearance and long-term performance. We can incorporate this into our quality assurance requirements for the finished product.

Why powder coating should be planned early…

The best possible results for our customers come from early discussions around the required paint finish, not just aesthetically but for durability and end purpose.

Before painting can begin, we talk with customers about:

  • Material choice
  • Fabrication methods
  • Surface preparation
  • Masking requirements
  • Handling and transport
  • Customer specifications

Final thoughts

Powder coating can be overlooked as it is at the end of the process, but getting a reliable finish quality depends on planning, control and experience.
