MPU Housing for Defence customer

MPU metalwork overview for a defence customer

MPU housing needed at speed

Our Defence customer won a large military supply contract which required subcontract support.

In order to meet the specified capacity uplift, they needed to purchase fully assembled and tested systems instead of individual components. Units needed to be marked with a unique identification number, with full material traceability. Timescales were tight and required a quick production ramp-up.

The Universal Wolf approach

We were chosen to supply the auxiliary hydraulic power unit because of our unique range of metalworking and testing skills, as well as our electrical assembly capabilities via our sister company Tharsus.

A thorough design review highlighted several of weight and cost saving opportunities, that also reduced quality risk by removing the need for safety critical welds.

As part of the project, we carried out full factory acceptance testing to 280 bar.

The outcome

Thanks to our team’s experience and knowledge of complex metal fabrication, we were able to make significant updates to the design. The original designs required multiple part fabrication, with 5 or 6 elements requiring coded welding; and 100% magnetic particle inspection. Our design updates took this to a single cover without welds, uniquely numbered parts with full material traceability, and automatic testing.

We fabricated 2000 units over a 6-month period.
